Steve discovered CrossFit in 2008 after learning about it online. He quickly joined CrossFit’s virtual community and started including CrossFit into his own workouts. Once he saw the benefits of CrossFit, he started integrating it into his one-on-one training and boot camp classes. After that he never looked back, moving over strictly to the CrossFit methodology.
Steve is excited to coach at CrossFit Wilmette. His goal is to grow this welcoming CrossFit community on the Northshore where people can encourage each other to achieve their fitness goals.
Steve lives in Deerfield with his wife and daughter who are both regulars at the gym.
Dr. John Poulos
Co-Owner, Coach, Chiropractor
- CrossFit Level 1
John D. Poulos, D.C., has been involved in athletics his entire life — as an athlete, trainer, and doctor. He has an active chiropractic practice where he guides his patients to understand their own issues and symptoms. He earned a bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology from the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) where he was a student trainer and worked with athletes from many different sports.
After graduating from UIC, Dr. John attended The National College of Chiropractic where he earned a second bachelor’s degree in biology and then went on to achieve his Doctor of Chiropractic degree in 2000.
Dr. John completed his first CrossFit workout on November 16, 2009. After he finished the workout, as he lay on the floor of his garage gym gasping for breath, he thought to himself, “This is what I’ve been looking for my whole life.” He quickly began studying CrossFit principles, which was better understood with his own knowledge of human performance and biomechanics. He became convinced that CrossFit is the preeminent regimen to achieve peak performance and overall fitness.
Dr. John earned his CrossFit Level 1 certification and then co-founded CrossFit Wilmette. His mission is to help as many people as possible achieve fitness they never thought possible.

Andrew Black is originally from Bethel, Connecticut and has also spent time in the Georgia/Florida area. He is currently a student enrolled at Oakton Community College pursuing a degree in Biology, and plans on attending Northwestern University in the future to attend their physical therapy graduate program. Recently serving in the United States Navy active duty for four years as a Master at Arms Petty Officer Third Class, he continues to serve his country in the United States Navy Selective Reserves Unit Great Lakes, IL. He has served in NSB Kings Bay, GA and NS Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.
Andrew discovered Crossfit while serving in the Navy. Prior to finding Crossfit, he was physically active with military training workouts and other workouts. Becoming bored and not being able to push himself in his current workouts, he was introduced to Crossfit by one of his friends. That is when his fitness life truly changed. Suddenly he was obsessed with his newly found passion and wanted to learn and know everything about it.
When Andrew came to the North Shore area he quickly looked for a Crossfit Gym, and found Crossfit Wilmette/Deerfield. After meeting the coaches and athletes of the gym he felt he was at home. Obtaining his Crossfit Level One Certification in Fall 2013 he is the newest coach at Crossfit Wilmette/Deerfield. Andrew is ecstatic to be a part of such a strong community of athletes that constantly push themselves.

- CrossFit Mobility
Jason Sweas, PT, DPT believes CrossFit is the perfect complement to the world of Physical Therapy in that it provides a vehicle for people to move from a state of wellness to a state of fitness and in doing so, preventing the gradual decline that happens with age. His training in Physical Therapy has taught him that correct movement patterns and proper posture are the best methods of injury prevention. And CrossFit’s emphasis on mechanics and consistency before intensity are a perfect philosophical match to these ideas.
Jason received his Doctor of Physical Therapy in 2008 from the University of Illinois at Chicago after a brief stint working as a logistics and financial analyst for Quill Corporation. Prior to this he graduated from the University of Michigan – Ann Arbor, studying Economics and Biology and meeting his beautiful wife, Kate.
After finding CrossFit in late 2008, Jason stopped his poor attempt at weightlifting and running for exercise almost immediately. Doing CrossFit WODs at the Evanston YMCA for 1.5 years prior to meeting Steve was challenging, but bumper plates and olympic lifts sealed the addiction. He passed his CrossFit Level 1 Certification test this year and also has been through the CrossFit Mobility Certification course.
Jason wants to see the CrossFit Wilmette Community grow and develop a reputation for loyalty and generosity. His vision of CrossFit Wilmette is to see a community of individuals working together to get better at all aspects of life.

Colleen Himan, RN, MSN, started CrossFit in 2013. Colleen is also a Wilmette Mom with 2 school aged boys and a Family Nurse Practitioner. She has a a vested interest in children’s health and believes movement and physical fitness are paramount to a child’s development. Marina has been involved in athletics since she could walk. As a kid she was involved in competitive gymnastics, dance and ice skating. Soon after retiring from competitive gymnastics, she was looking for a new sport that was fast paced and exciting. After doing some research online Marina found CrossFit Wilmette and started her first introductory lesson later that week. She’s been hooked ever since. CrossFit has pushed Marina to be in the best shape of her life, physically as well as mentally. She believes that CrossFit is successful not only due to the constant variation of moments, but also the amazing community that it has to offer its athletes.
Since starting CrossFit, she has found a specific interest in the Olympic weightlifting area of CrossFit. After consistently training for three years, Olympic weightlifting has taken her around the country, building up her skills to compete at the national level. She has also had the opportunity to train at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, CO. This opportunity allowed her to train with the nation’s best athletes, as well as seeing the kind of dedication it takes to become a professional athlete.
